Preview: The RCB vs CSK story so far

The real “Clasico” of the IPL is back!

There is a lot of talk about the match between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. It is often called “The Clasico” of the IPL which means “The Classic” is Spanish. The name comes from the football match between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, arguably the two biggest teams of club football. Also, two very bitter rivals whose history spills into regional politics as well.

MI and CSK are rivals more so for being the two most successful teams in the IPL. Both teams having won 5 trophies each and have large fanbases. It is natural to pit the two teams as the biggest rivals to hype up the clash. However, there is a strong argument that RCB vs CSK can be called a fiercer rivalry than MI vs CSK.

RCB vs CSK is a classic sporting rivalry

A true sporting rivalry has certain key elements involved:

    1. A large and loyal fanbase:

This goes without saying. Fans make the sport as big as it is. They are the lifeblood of the spectacle that is IPL. Both RCB and CSK have very large fanbases who are both fiercely loyal to their respective franchises.

CSK and RCB are the first and second most followed team on Instagram. Including other major social media platforms such as Facebook and X, RCB comes a close third behind CSK and MI. The latter two have 10 IPL trophies between them and are proven teams. RCB on the other hand is yet to win their first trophy. Hence, RCB’s fan following size should not be taken lightly.

    2. Iconic Players in both teams:

Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni are, without doubt, the biggest icons of cricket in present times.

Kohli and RCB have been an inseparable match for all 17 editions in the IPL. He is not only a fan-favourite but also one of the best players of the IPL. He is the chasemaster, the run-machine with the most runs in the IPL and two orange caps to his name.

MSD on the other hand is one of the greatest leaders of the game, being able to mould ordinary players into match-winners. His finishing ability is lethal and his fandom like Kohli’s is beyond franchises and borders.

    3. History

The head-to-head numbers favour CSK strongly, but RCB have spoilt their party more than once. The latest being the last group game of both teams in last year’s edition of the IPL.

Known as the “1 percent” game among fans, RCB fought all odds to knock CSK out of the tournament. It was speculated to be MS Dhoni’s last season, but RCB stopped CSK short of even making it to the qualifiers. It was a dramatic game that had some controversies following it as well. Nonetheless, the emotions between RCB and CSK players and fans have always been high. Expect no less this time around too, no matter what the head-to-head stats say.

The stats in MA Chidambaram stadium heavily favour CSK

RCB’s lone victory in the Chepauk stadium was back in 2008 in the first edition of the IPl. So, a win there is no easy feat, which is a major driving factor for RCB. CSK have not forgotten last year’s defeat. They are waiting to exact revenge in the fortress that they have built at Chepauk. It is set up to be an entertaining clash folks. Enjoy the game, enjoy the banter but kindly be respectful to fellow fans of cricket. Sport is, after all meant to unite. AND as always, thanks for reading and your support!
