Final Result – Royal Challengers Bengaluru win by 6 wickets and 9 balls to spare.
Second innings, death overs – RCB: 165-4
- This was a masterclass in staying resilient and chasing under pressure.
- Krunal and Kohli really delivered under a lot of pressure. Both of them scored well deserved half-centuries. There was a lot of communication and support between the duo in the middle.
- Tim David came in when the chase was at 17 needed from 11. The big man smashed away 19 from 5 to kill the game early.
- A little luck along the way as Krunal was dropped on 54 by Abhishek Porel. A big moment in the game.
- RCB have now won 6 of 6 away games and created a new record in the IPL.
After 15 overs – RCB: 114-3
- A beautiful show from the pair of Krunal and Kohli. RCB needed a big partnership to tide over the early loss of wickets.
- A very pragmatic but also necessary pacing of the chase that transitioned at the right time to relieve scoreboard pressure. RCB went from 78-3 after 12 overs to 114-3 by the end of 15 overs. Those three overs took pressure off and turned the good standing between the duo into a game changing partnership.
Second Innings, after powerplay – RCB: 35-3
- Axar Patel’s decision to bring himself in for bowling in the powerplay paid dividends. He cramped the openers for room and that pressure led to wickets.
- Jacob Bethell, the debutant, had a great over against Mitch Starc. He smacked the Aussie for 11 runs. But he didn’t change his strategy against the wily Axar Patel and got caught trying to go big.
- Padikkal too gave his wicket away cheaply as he dragged the ball on to his wickets.
- Patidar’s presence was crucial and a partnership with Kohli could have rescued the team after the double whammy. But, he too had to walk back after being run out by Karun Nair.
- All in all, RCB once again lost wickets trying to go too hard on a pitch that isn’t as straightforward. The batters could have tried to ease up and see Axar off before going after the pacers.
Target for RCB – 163
First innings, death overs – DC final score: 162-8
- The bowling unit has been expensive in the death. Some of the good work in the middle overs was undone by two expensive overs.
- Josh Hazlewood and Yash Dayal gave away 36 runs in the 18th and 19th over respectively.
- Tristan Stubbs had a brilliant show for DC. Smashing 34 from 18, he powered the Capitals to a decent total.
- Bhuvi made a massive comeback after an expensive start in the powerplay. Giving away just 8 runs in his last 2 overs, he dismissed the dangerous Ashutosh Sharma for just 2. He also ended Stubbs’ innings in the final over and put a stop to DC’s score.
- Having said that, this is DC’s lowest total after playing all 20 overs this season. So overall, it’s another fantastic show from the bowling unit.
After 15 overs – DC: 102-4
- RCB take back control in the middle overs. The spinners decimated the runrate by bowling dots and singles.
- Krunal Pandya was once again crucial for RCB. In his 3 overs he gave just 19 runs and picked the wicket of Faf du Plessis.
- Suyash assisted KP with tight control from the other end. The leggie gave away just 22 runs in his 4 overs.
- Josh Hazlewood – this man is brilliant. He was brought back to break the important partnership that was building between Axar and KL. Castling Axar Patel, Hoff delivered his captain’s ask.
First innings, after Powerplay – DC: 52-2
- The opening pair of Abhishek Porel and Faf du Plessis had a two face powerplay. Porel went after the bowlers and smashed 28 from just 11. Faf on the other hand struggled to find runs.
- Josh Hazlewood was once again brilliant. Continuing where he left off, Hoff picked the explosive Porel’s wicket.
- Yash Dayal had a decent PP. He went for some runs before taking the wicket of Karun Nair.
- Bhuvi had a forgettable powerplay. He went for plenty of runs – 25 runs in 2 overs. He was the primary target of Porel’s hitting. A little bit of a slump in form for the otherwise consistent swing-master.
